Photographing fluorescence in the aquarium
|
What you need to photograph fluorescence
- Light source and filters to view your tank and find what you want to photograph.
- An excitation filter for your strobe. The excitation filter converts
your strobe from a source of white light to a source of blue light.
- A barrier filter for your camera. The barrier filter prevents
the excitation light from reaching the film, so that you record only the fluorescence emission.

Excitation filter
Do not try to use the pop-up camera flash built into your camera. It is just not powerful enough for making good fluorescence photographs. There is a wide variety of external camera flashes so we do not have a general solution for fitting the excitation filter. We work with the customer to determine the size of filter needed to cover the flash and have that custom cut. The cost for a single custom cut excitation filter is $50, with a discount for purchases of multiple filters.
Barrier filter
The barrier filter is available in standard photographic thread sizes, from 49 mm to 72 mm, to fit most camera lenses. The filters mounted in the standard holders are glass. We can also custom cut the filters in acrylic to just about any size. Contact NightSea to inquire. Pricing for the standard thread sizes is shown below. Custom cut acrylic sizes are $40 and up, depending on size.
