What's the connection between underwater fluorescence and seasickness? Just the author. NightSea founder Charles Mazel, all too personally familiar with seasickness, wrote this book several years ago. It was first released by International Marine (division of McGraw-Hill) and then re-released by Bernel Books. More than 12,000 copies have been sold, but it is now hard to find. NightSea has obtained a number of copies of both editions and is making them available. All copies will be signed by the author, and if you are giving them as a gift your own custom dedication can be included. The book is a combination of modern fact, historical interest, and humor. It covers all aspects of seasickness: what it is, what causes it, how to prevent it, how to say seasickness in more than 50 languages, what to eat (or not eat) if you're going to be seasick, and more. There are numerous quotations from literature ranging from the Romans and Greeks over 2,000 years ago, through 19th century medical journals, up to the modern day. Lots of interesting historical and societal tidbits, and the text is accompanied by original cartoons and peppered with original limericks.

And much, much more.
"If there has ever been a more complete compendium of seasickness in history anywhere, it is long out of print. Mazel's volume starts with the Romans and takes us through the wheres, whys, whos and whens of this almost universal ailment." "The perfect gift for someone leaving on a cruise, joining the Navy, or for any boater." "Heave Ho is written for laughs, and it contains lots of them! ... This is the sort of stocking stuffer you'll be glad you bought for someone who enjoys boating." "The ultimate stocking stuffer for the skipper who has everything... filled with 2000 years of collected seasickness wit and wisdom."
The text of the two editions is identical. Only the cover is different. The first edition was bundled with a 'barf bag' that has a picture of the book cover on it. The copies of the first edition that you buy through NightSea will have this barf bag.
NightSea founder Charles Mazel has spent more than 30 years in marine-related activities, including a stint doing deep-sea bathymetry and oceanography, as a field engineer for a company that manufactured side scan sonars and sub-bottom profilers, as a technical specialist on various marine archaeology projects, and now as a marine scientist researching the optics of seafloor organisms, and as a purveyor of fluorescence viewing and imaging equipment to the sport and science diving communities. Combine this with a predisposition toward seasickness, and he has had a chance to throw up in many of the world's oceans and seas, not to mention the occasional gulf and bay. Charlie long ago came to grips with the fact that he liked going to sea more than he disliked being seasick. The best way to deal with it was to keep a sense of humor about it, and that eventually led to this book.
