Fluorescence Images by Justin Marshall

The photographs on this page were taken by Dr. Justin Marshall, head of the Sensory Ecology Laboratory at the Vision, Touch, and Hearing Research Centre (VTHRC), University of Queensland, Australia. Justin researches fish and invertebrate vision, and color in the marine environment. I (Charlie Mazel) had the good fortune to spend some time working with Justin at the Heron Island Research Station, on Heron Island in the southern Great Barrier Reef. There is also a resort on Heron Island, and following a talk that Justin gave at the resort we tried out the NightSea lights on a coral display tank in the resort's visitor center. There was lots to see, so we came back with Justin's digital camera to take the pictures on this page, in most cases taking both reflected-light and fluorescence images.

Technical details:

Camera: Olympus C-4040

Camera filter: NightSea BlueBlock Filter Visor held in front of the lens

Light source: One or two Underwater Kinetics Light Cannon lighting the subject from above the tank or through the glass

Excitation filter: NightSea BE1 on UK Light Cannon

Exposure: camera on automatic

Note: The exposure was long enough to require a tripod, so this steady light source would not be adequate for handheld underwater photography.
