Fluorescence Images by Steve Ackleson

The images on this page were frame-grabbed from underwater fluorescence video taken by Dr. Steven Ackleson, with the assistance of Charlie Mazel. This was our first trial of using the Underwater Kinetics Light Cannon with the NightSea exciter filter as a video light for fluorescence. Steve operated the camera and Charlie held the light. For some of the shots Steve turned on his conventional filament video lights so we could acquire reflected-light images for comparison.

Note the dead branches in the middle of the colony. They lack the green fluorescent pigment that is in the living coral and are completely dark in the fluorescence image.

The sequence of 4 images above shows a transition from all reflected to all fluoresced light
